Once again, our friends at Briess are making headlines! This is the second time this year that Briess has been recognized by the Wisconsin business community – SPI is happy to be their partner!
Briess Industries Inc. was recently presented the Wisconsin Business Friend of the Environment Award-Medium Size for leadership in environmental stewardship. The award was presented by the Wisconsin Environmental Working Group, an affiliate of Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce. Accomplishments of the company’s “Green With Briess” program were cited in the nomination. The company-wide, all-encompassing sustainability program was initiated in 2005. The majority of emissions reductions occurred in manufacturing plants, through capital improvements and innovative redesigns of systems and processes. In addition, 99% of all waste streams at Briess are now recycled.
There are so many sources for information about how America’s food is produced! Unfortunately that includes some misinformation as well. In response to this, AMI has teamed up with the American Meat Science Association to launch a “Meat Myth Crushers” campaign; in an effort to connect people to modern food production – and also attempt to “crush” some of the myths associated with meat processing.

What is the scoop on diabetes?
Recent numbers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paint a desperate situation:
• Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.
• Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.
• Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.
What can you do to educate yourself on your own risks? Visit the American Diabetes Association website to assess your personal risk and learn how to make lifestyle adjustments.
Exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and eat whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables – things we hear about in prevention of other deadly diseases like cancer, stroke and heart disease.

We had a great time with the Research Chefs at the RCA West Coast Regional Event in Napa yesterday! As a precursor to the Worlds of Flavors conference hosted by the CIA, we joined other RCA members at Cook restaurant in Napa, and sampled appetizers and cocktails from sponsors. The event included a raffle to raise funds for student scholarships, and there were several culinary school students in attendance.
We like the Research Chef’s Association for their forward-thinking, vibrant, energy – and we like being part of a dynamic community of food professionals! Hoping they have more local events soon!
